When I Broke

When I broke

my ego fell and died

and bits of me picked up pieces of my mirror

looked at all the bad luck

and stuck some in me and some in you

and left some on the floor

which covered the world in red reflections

I sat and bled and read

found the dead bits of me had left something good – me – behind

which saw all the flying pieces of my mind

saw all the beauty that was kind

so I wouldn’t give anything to rewind

this pain

lucked out and looked

taught me who and where and why and what and when I am

alive.
